Tenderness

Gabriela Mistral · 1924 CE · Poem · Latin American · Modernist

Cradle songs, counting rhymes and rounds to be sung by children holding hands, in which the earth, the wheat and the sea are all taken to be dancing the same ring. Small bare feet on cold ground and the child of a woman who has none are the recurring wounds under the sweetness. Written out of years of rural schoolteaching and first printed in Madrid, it is the book by which Mistral is still taught to Spanish-speaking children.
