Sons and Lovers
Gertrude Morel, married to a Nottinghamshire collier she has stopped loving, puts everything she has into her sons, and the second of them grows up drawing, clerking at a surgical appliance factory, and unable to give himself to any woman she has not approved. Miriam Leivers at the farm offers him a spiritual intensity he comes to resent, and Clara Dawes, separated from her husband and active in the suffrage movement, offers him something else. Lawrence built it closely on his own family at Eastwood, and Edward Garnett cut about a tenth of the manuscript before Duckworth would print it.
