Goodbye, Columbus
A librarian from working-class Newark spends the summer of 1957 with a Radcliffe student whose family has moved up to suburban Short Hills, where the basement refrigerator is stocked with fruit nobody counts and the nose jobs are paid for without comment. Class, not religion, is what divides them, and neither can say so. Roth was twenty-six; the title novella and five stories won a National Book Award and drew rabbinical charges of self-hatred.
