White Teeth

Okot p'Bitek · 1953 CE · Novel · East African · Contemporary

A young Acholi man wants to marry, the bride-price is beyond anything his family can raise, and so he leaves the village for wage labour in Kampala and the sugar estates. Everything he earns finds somewhere to go other than the debt. Written in Acholi while p'Bitek was still a village schoolteacher, decades before the English translation carried it abroad.
