The Counterlife
A New Jersey dentist left impotent by his heart medication gambles on surgery rather than live without sex, and his brother Nathan flies in for the funeral — then the book restarts with the dentist alive on a West Bank settlement, reborn as a militant. Each section cancels the one before, moving the same marriages between New Jersey, Israel and England. Roth's most formally radical work, and the one that proved him more than a comic realist.
