A Room with a View
E. M. Forster · 1908 CE · Novel · English · Modernist
Lucy Honeychurch and her cousin Charlotte arrive at a Florence pension with rooms facing a courtyard, and an ill-mannered old man and his son offer to swap for their view. A murder in the Piazza Signoria and a carriage ride into the violets above Fiesole leave Lucy with something she has agreed with everyone to call nothing, and she goes home to Surrey and an engagement to a cultivated man. Forster worked at it for years under the name of the Lucy novel before the Italian and English halves fitted together.
