Wives and Daughters
A country doctor's only daughter, seventeen and used to keeping his house, is given a stepmother who lies from habit and a stepsister with a secret engagement already behind her. Around them the squire's two sons and the great family at the Towers turn small provincial questions of money and marriage into public ones. Gaskell died with the last chapters unwritten; what survives is the most Austen-like of the great Victorian studies of provincial life.
