North and South
A southern clergyman's daughter is uprooted from a Hampshire parish to a smoky northern manufacturing town, where she takes the mill owner at once for a hard man and then finds herself between him and his hands during a strike. Deaths in both houses, a secret about her brother and a run on the mill force each of them to revise what they thought they knew about the other's country. Written for Household Words after Manchester's masters had objected to the one-sidedness of her first novel, it gives the employers their case.
