Norma Rae
A single mother working the looms in a North Carolina cotton mill lets a New York union organiser talk to her when nobody else in town will, then starts signing up the floor herself. Her father, her husband and the plant management all want her to stop, and the noise of the machines makes speech impossible anyway. Field carried one of the few American pictures of the decade to take industrial labour seriously.
