Mother

Maxim Gorky · 1906 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

A factory widow of forty, beaten by her husband for twenty years and frightened of the books her son has started bringing home, watches him turn from drink to organising and begins carrying the group's leaflets through the gates in her apron, on the reasoning that nobody searches a mother. Arrests, a courtroom and the years of reaction after 1905 move her from doing errands out of love for one man to work she claims as her own. Written largely in the United States and judged a failure by Gorky himself, it was installed after his death as the founding model of Socialist Realism.
