Ashapoorna Devi · 1964 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Satyabati is married out of a Bengal village while still a child, into a world where a woman who reads is a scandal and a girl of eight is late to the wedding canopy, and she sets herself against all of it from inside the household rather than by leaving it. What she means to secure for her daughter is the promise of the title, that this girl will not be handed over the way her mother was, and Calcutta — where her husband's work takes them — is both her opening and her exposure. The first volume of a trilogy following three generations of women, and the book for which Ashapoorna Devi became the first woman to take the Jnanpith.
