The Mother

Bertolt Brecht · 1932 CE · Play · German · Modernist

A widow in a Russian factory town waters the soup and worries that her son's friends will get him arrested, until she carries their leaflets to the gates herself on the reasoning that nobody searches a mother. Through 1905, the war and the years of reaction she learns to read, to argue with the neighbours, and to keep a press in her kitchen. Brecht rebuilt Gorky's novel as a Lehrstück with music by Eisler, stripped of every consolation.
