Gifts

Nuruddin Farah · 1993 CE · Novel · East African · Contemporary

Duniya is a nurse in Mogadishu with three children and two marriages behind her, and in the same week a foundling is left on her doorstep and a suitor begins pressing things on her that she has no wish to owe anyone for. Around them the country fills with donated food and donated advice. Farah wrote it against Mauss's essay on the obligations a gift creates, and the interleaved news items keep the parallel in view.
