Deeriye is old, asthmatic and devout, jailed once by the Italians and again by the General, and he passes his days with the Qur'an and with visits from his dead wife while his son Mursal and Mursal's friends plan something they will not describe to him. The book keeps to the old man's patience as the young men's scheme comes on. Its title turns the magic formula of the Nights the other way round.
