One Thousand and One Nights
A king betrayed by his wife takes a new bride each night and has her killed each morning, until the vizier's daughter Shahrazad volunteers. She begins a story at nightfall and breaks off before dawn, so the king postpones the execution to hear the end, and then she begins another. Storytelling as survival, and the frame that carries Sindbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba.
