New Arabian Nights

R. L. Stevenson · 1882 CE · Short Story · English · Victorian

Prince Florizel of Bohemia goes about London in disguise with his Master of the Horse and is drawn, by way of a young man handing out cream tarts in an oyster bar, into a club whose members have all resolved to die and cut cards each night to settle who and by whose hand. A stolen diamond passes through a curate, a private detective and a young man's hands in a second sequence, ruining in turn everyone who holds it. Stevenson took Scheherazade's device of a frame around linked tales and set it loose in the modern city.
