The Master of Ballantrae

R. L. Stevenson · 1889 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

When the Prince lands in 1745 the two brothers of Durrisdeer toss a coin to settle which will ride out for him and which will hold the estate for whichever side wins, and the elder goes. Word comes back that he fell at Culloden; the younger takes the title, the lands and the woman, and then the elder walks in again, charming, penniless and in no hurry at all. Mackellar, the steward who tells it, hates one brother, serves the other, and is honest enough to record how little the family deserves either.
