A Child's Garden of Verses
Sixty-odd short pieces spoken by or about a child alone with a counterpane, a swing, a shadow that goes in and out at his heels, and a lamplighter who comes up the street at dusk. They run from nonsense and invented voyages to the flat loneliness of being sent to bed while it is still light outside. Stevenson wrote them in his thirties, an invalid remembering his own bedridden Edinburgh childhood, and dedicated the book to the nurse who had sat up with him.
