In Memoriam A.H.H.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson · 1850 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Seventeen years of short four-stress stanzas written after the sudden death at twenty-two of the friend Tennyson expected as a brother-in-law, arranged as a sequence turning on three Christmases and a body brought home by sea. Doubt is given full weight first, in a nature red in tooth and claw and a geological waste of time that cares nothing for love. The central Victorian poem of grief, and the one Queen Victoria kept by her after Albert died.
