Maud
The son of a ruined speculator lives beside the hall of the man he holds responsible, nursing a hatred he enjoys, until the daughter of that house comes back from abroad and rides past him. Tennyson called the thing a monodrama: lyrics in constantly shifting metres carrying one unstable voice through courtship, a quarrel at a dance and a collapse. It was his own favourite among his works and the one his readers liked least.
