Tithonus

Alfred, Lord Tennyson · 1860 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

At the quiet limit of the world a man who asked the goddess of the dawn for immortality and forgot to ask for youth watches the woods decay and fall while he alone withers without release. Every morning she renews herself beside him, and every morning he asks her to take her gift back and let him lie in the earth like other men. Drafted in 1833 beside Ulysses and held back for nearly thirty years; the answer to that poem's appetite for more life.
