The Charge of the Light Brigade

Alfred, Lord Tennyson · 1854 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Six hundred cavalry are sent a league and a half down a valley with batteries on three sides, because someone has blundered and the order stands. The dactylic metre keeps the pace of the horses, and its refusal to reason why fixed the phrase in English. Tennyson read the Times dispatch from Balaclava and had the poem written within weeks; as laureate he later had copies printed for the troops outside Sevastopol.
