The Lady of Shalott

Alfred, Lord Tennyson · 1832 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

On an island in the river above Camelot a woman weaves what a mirror shows her, forbidden by a curse she only half understands to look down at the road where the reapers and the funerals and the two young lovers go by. Her web fills with the shadows of the world until a knight in brazen greaves rides past singing. Tennyson worked from an Italian novella of the Damigella di Scalot rather than from Malory.
