Cities of the Plain
In 1952 the two young men of the earlier books are hands on a New Mexico spread the army intends to take, running dogs in the hills and crossing the river at night into Juárez. One of them settles on a girl in a white house there and will not be talked out of buying her free of the man who owns her. The trilogy's last movement finally puts both of its wanderers in the same bunkhouse.
