The Orchard Keeper

Cormac McCarthy · 1965 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

In a hollow outside Knoxville between the wars, a bootlegger runs whiskey down the mountain, an old man keeps watch over a body rotting in an abandoned spray tank, and a boy grows up hunting the ridges. None of the three learns how he is joined to the others, though the reader does. A first book, written in long sentences, about a world the highway is about to pave over.
