Child of God
Dispossessed of his father's farm at auction, Lester Ballard drifts to the edge of a Sevier County community, sleeping first in an abandoned cabin and then in the limestone caves under the mountain. County voices break in to remember him as a boy while the narrative follows him past hunting, theft and worse. The claim of the title is made in the second sentence and never withdrawn.
