Frankenstein

James Whale · 1931 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A young scientist assembles a body from robbed graves and raises it on a laboratory table into the lightning of a storm, then recoils from what sits up. Given a damaged brain by a bungling assistant, the creature is chained in a cellar and beaten with torches until it breaks out into the countryside. Whale's angled expressionist sets and Karloff's flat-skulled makeup fixed the monster's image for a century.
