The Secret Garden

Frances Hodgson Burnett · 1911 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Orphaned by cholera in India, sour and unwanted, Mary Lennox is shipped to an uncle's shut-up house on the Yorkshire moors, where a hundred rooms are locked and somebody cries at night. A robin shows her the door to a walled garden sealed for ten years, and she begins clearing it in secret with a moor boy who charms animals. Burnett's late work has long outlasted the adult bestsellers that made her name.
