Tom's Midnight Garden
Sent away to a childless aunt and uncle for the summer because his brother has measles, Tom is quarantined, bored and sleepless in a converted flat with no garden and nothing to do. The grandfather clock in the hall strikes thirteen, and the back door opens onto lawns, a yew and a girl named Hatty who is the only person out there able to see him. Pearce's book is the standard against which English time-slip fiction is still measured.
