Il Filostrato

Giovanni Boccaccio · c. 1335 CE · Poem · Italian · Medieval

In the tenth year of the siege a son of Priam who has spent his life mocking lovers is caught at a temple festival by the sight of the daughter of the priest who defected, and her cousin Pandaro offers at once to carry the letters. The secret meetings and the sworn constancy hold until a prisoner exchange is negotiated over the lovers' heads by men who do not know they exist. Boccaccio wrote it in ottava rima in his twenties out of the French Troy material of Benoît de Sainte-Maure, which is not in this index, and framed it as a letter about a courtship of his own.
