Floating Clouds

Mikio Naruse · 1955 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Repatriated to a bombed-out Tokyo after the war, a typist seeks out the forestry engineer she loved in French Indochina and finds him married, evasive and diminished, yet neither can quite let the other go through the drifting, shabby years that follow. Naruse follows their reunions and desertions with a patience that refuses both romance and judgment. Adapted from Fumiko Hayashi's novel Ukigumo; Kinema Junpo's critics have twice ranked the film among the three greatest Japanese pictures ever made.
