Irretrievable
A Schleswig count builds himself a white house on the cliff above the Baltic and finds his devout wife more and more of a reproach inside it, so that a winter's attendance on the Danish court at Copenhagen comes as a release. There he meets a sharp half-Jewish lady-in-waiting who says out loud everything Christine would never say, and a fire in the palace hands him what he thinks he has been wanting. Fontane held that marriage was his real subject, and this is the book in which the damage is done by nothing worse than boredom.
