The Stechlin
An old Brandenburg squire whose manor stands beside a lake said to stir whenever there is an earthquake anywhere in the world stands for the Conservatives in a district that has stopped wanting them. His son's engagement brings a Berlin household and a widowed countess with opinions of her own into the county, and almost everything of consequence happens in conversation. Fontane, near eighty, summarised the plot as an old man dying and two young people marrying, and left the rest to the talk.
