A Man's Place

Annie Ernaux · 1983 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · French · Contemporary

Two months after his daughter passes the examination that makes her a teacher, a man who had gone from farm labour to the factory to a small café-grocery in a Normandy town dies at home in his bed. She sets out to give the life in the plain language he used himself, refusing anecdote, irony and every device that would turn him into a character. The flat writing Ernaux is known for begins here, and with it her break from fiction.
