Simple Passion

Annie Ernaux · 1991 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · French · Contemporary

From one September to the November of the following year, a woman in her late forties arranges her whole existence around a married foreigner who telephones when he can: what she wears, what she reads, where in the flat she stands, the exact time a drive out from Paris takes. The state is recorded without being explained, justified or regretted. Attacked in France on publication for precisely the absence of shame that is its method.
