La Dorotea

Lope de Vega · 1632 CE · Novel · Spanish · Renaissance

Dorotea has been kept by the poet Fernando, who has no money and writes her verses, and her mother and the go-between Gerarda are steering her toward a rich American suitor instead. What follows is all talk: five acts of prose dialogue with nobody watching. Lope wrote it at seventy about the affair that got him exiled from Madrid at twenty-six, on the model of La Celestina.
