Possession

A. S. Byatt · 1990 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A junior scholar lifts two draft letters from a Victorian poet's own copy of Vico in the London Library and does not put them back. Tracing the woman they were addressed to takes him into the company of a feminist critic who holds the other half of the correspondence, and both of them into a race with better-funded rivals for whatever survives. Byatt invented Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte, and wrote their verse herself, rather than write directly about Robert Browning and Christina Rossetti; it took the Booker in 1990.
