Angels and Insects

A. S. Byatt · 1992 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A naturalist home from the Amazon with his collections lost at sea is taken in by a rich Yorkshire family, marries the beautiful eldest daughter and settles to watching the ant colonies on the lawn. In the second half a Margate medium sits with Alfred Tennyson's sister, still bound after forty years to the young man her brother mourned in verse, while Swedenborg's doctrine of angelic marriage is put to the table. Two novellas of the 1860s, each turning on what Victorian natural science and Victorian spiritualism were prepared to believe.
