Brideshead Revisited
Billeted with his company on a requisitioned country estate in 1943, an army captain recognises the house and remembers the family who owned it: the charming, damaged younger son he met at Oxford, the sister he later loved, and the Catholicism that stood between him and both. The remembering runs from undergraduate summers through Venice, Morocco and a transatlantic crossing in a storm. Waugh called it a study of the operation of divine grace, and later found its wartime lushness embarrassing enough to revise.
