Maurice
A conventional suburban schoolboy goes up to Cambridge, reads the Symposium with a squire's son named Clive Durham and is told he is loved, and spends the years after in the City trying hypnotism and self-disgust in turn. At Clive's decaying estate an under-gamekeeper climbs a ladder to his window. Written in 1913 after a visit to Edward Carpenter and George Merrill at Millthorpe, which Forster's terminal note credits directly, and kept back from print for his lifetime.
