Lady Chatterley's Lover
Constance Chatterley keeps house in the Midlands for a husband who came back from the war paralysed from the waist down and has turned his energy first to writing and then to coal. She takes to walking down to the wood where the gamekeeper rears pheasants, and the affair that follows is set out in a language, and at a length, that no publisher would touch. Issued privately in Florence in 1928 and pirated for thirty years, it was cleared for open publication in Britain only after Penguin was tried and acquitted under the Obscene Publications Act in 1960.
