The Lost Girl

Alvina Houghton, daughter of a Midlands draper whose shop and schemes are failing one after another, trains as a maternity nurse to escape and comes back to play piano for the cinema her father has opened. A touring troupe of performers billed as Red Indians lodges above the shop, and one of them, Ciccio, is from a village in the Abruzzi. Begun before the war as The Insurrection of Miss Houghton, finished in Sicily, and the book that won Lawrence the James Tait Black.
