Women in Love

D. H. Lawrence · 1920 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Two sisters in a Midlands colliery town, a schoolmistress and a sculptor, take up with a school inspector who mistrusts love as it is usually practiced and with the young industrialist who has modernised his father's mines. Talk, quarrels, a drowning at a water-party and a broken engagement drive both couples finally to the Alps. Written through the war and refused by publishers as obscene, it is Lawrence's harshest examination of what men and women want from each other.
