The Circle Game

Margaret Atwood · 1966 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

A couple keep house together while the woman watches the man refuse to be known, and outside the window children repeat a ring game whose rules close a circle nobody can enter. The poems move between rented rooms, maps, photographs and a cold northern country that will not be domesticated. Atwood's first major collection took the Governor General's Award and set the watchful, unsentimental voice her fiction later inherited.
