Cat's Eye

Margaret Atwood · 1988 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A painter returns to Toronto for her first retrospective and finds the city crowded with a childhood she had filed away: the wartime years driving north with her entomologist father, and then the three girls who took her up at nine and taught her what friendship can be used for. The pictures on the gallery walls turn out to record it. Atwood's most autobiographical novel gives female cruelty none of the consolations the subject usually gets.
