Surfacing

Margaret Atwood · 1972 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A woman drives north to the island in Quebec where she was raised, to find out what became of her father, bringing her lover and a married couple along in a borrowed car. The cabin, the lake and the bush give up their evidence slowly, and what she has been telling everyone about her own past turns out to be edited. Atwood's second novel became a founding text of Canadian literary nationalism and of 1970s feminist fiction at once.
