Love Medicine
June Kashpaw walks out of a bar in an oil town and dies in the Easter snow trying to get home to the reservation, and over fifty years of chapters her relatives take turns explaining how she got there — Marie and Nector Kashpaw, Lulu Lamartine, the escape artist Gerry Nanapush, and Lipsha Morrissey, who does not know whose son he is. Lipsha's attempt at a love medicine, made in a hurry with frozen supermarket turkey hearts instead of the geese the old recipe calls for, kills the man it was meant to bind. Erdrich's first novel and the beginning of the interlocking North Dakota cycle she has been extending ever since.
