There There

Tommy Orange · 2018 CE · Novel · Native American · Contemporary

Twelve people with Oakland addresses and complicated claims on being Indian converge on the Big Oakland Powwow: a young man filming other people's stories for a grant, a boy who has taught himself his grandmother's dances off the internet, a woman coming to meet the grandsons she has never met, and three cousins planning to take the prize money with guns printed in plastic. A prologue runs from Sand Creek through the boarding schools to the federal relocation programmes, and accounts for why every one of them is in a city instead of on a reservation. Orange's first novel, a Pulitzer finalist, and the most widely read account of urban Native life in recent American fiction.
