Going to Meet the Man
A white deputy sheriff in a Southern town lies awake beside his wife, unable to reach for her, going back over the day's work in the jail and a boy who would not stop singing. What comes up instead is a Sunday in his childhood when his parents dressed him and drove him out to a clearing in the woods with the rest of the county. The title story of Baldwin's only collection, published in 1965 alongside Sonny's Blues.
