March
Mr March, the chaplain absent from his family through most of Little Women, serves with the Union army in Virginia and writes home about it in letters that spare his wife and daughters the worst. A visit to a plantation he knew in his youth and a hospital in Washington force him to face what he has chosen to leave out. Brooks takes Alcott's idealised father and gives him the war Alcott kept offstage, and the book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
